Once upon a time there was an Italian merchant who owed a moneylender a large sum of money. The old and ugly moneylender fancied the merchants’ daughter. He then proposed a debt waiver offer to the father-daughter duo. The offer was that the merchant’s debt would be forgiven if he married his daughter to the moneylender. Both the merchant and his daughter were horrified by the debt waiver offer. The girl was supposed to pick among a black and white pebble which would determine her and the merchant’s fate.
