One of the few voices that actually sends chills down my spine is Randy Travis’.
He tragically had a stroke many years ago, but that didn’t stop him from singing “Amazing Grace” in praise of George Jones, a fellow country music artist, in a stunning performance.
The iconic artist, paying tribute to the recently deceased George Jones, was backlit by blue and purple illumination while giving a performance at the Grand Ole Opry.
Travis was joined by peers like Alan Jackson, Vince Gill, and Travis Tritt.
Mary, Travis’s wife, has publicly discussed her husband’s difficult stroke and how helpful devoted fans have been during this time.
Randy Travis was brought to a Dallas hospital on a fateful day in July 2013 due to viral cardiomyopathy issues. After having a stroke, he required brain surgery and fell into a coma. The country and gospel music legend’s prognosis was poor, according to the physicians, who estimated that his odds of survival were only 1% to 2%.
As a result, there was little point in continuing their efforts to sustain his life.
Mary Davis Travis, his wife, had the option of just turning off the life support and letting her husband doze off. She was asked directly by the doctors. What did she wish to accomplish?
However, she chose to break all the normal rules. Rather than following the norm and listening to doctors, she elected to do something completely different.
Mary knew her husband was a warrior even though the specialists may have only given him a 1-2% chance of survival. She was unable to just switch the respirators off.
“I prayed hard, ‘God, please let me have him back, any way, shape or form,’” May recalls saying.
Randy remained in a coma, entangled in a bed of wires, but Mary never once considered switching his machines off – even though her husband was basically just skin and bones.
Then, one day, the miracle presented itself. Randy woke up.
“We’re blessed. We’re happy to be where we are. We don’t know what God has in store for us at the end of this recovery. Right now, we’re just thankful to be where we are, and we’re singing a different song,” she said. “We’re happy to serve a purpose wherever there is a purpose for us to serve. Of course, one day he would love to be back up on that stage. Right now, we’re just enjoying life, and are very blessed to be where we are.”
Since his stroke, Randy has been confined to a wheelchair, but he is improving and can now walk short distances on his own. He has also taken up music, and he still has a deep interest and inclination for it.
After regaining his ability to walk, he was honored into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.
”Everyone who knows Randy knows he has had a colorful life. He’s had a tough life at times, but also a beautiful life,” his wife says.
Travis, who is still dealing with aphasia, has clearly been trying and praying to regain his previous level of brilliance if the performance below is any indication.
